Indie games part 2!
Dante | 20 Aug 2009K so, in a previous post I mentioned that I picked up some Indie Games for cheap thanks to a Steam Deal.
Now, I love games but what I love most is a sense of “uniqueness” about any game I play, which is why I love Indie games as they do something no one else has done…or rather they do it in a vastly different manner.
So quick round up and summary of the games I played:
Audiosurf:
- Well I already had this game and played it since its release on steam…love it and will always love it. Its basically a game where you control a little shuttle ship thing and it races along a track made by the melodies and beats in the music you listen to.
- Get it, play it and you’ll love it.
The Path:
- I played this more than the other games…I honestly dont know exactly what I was doing…but god I had fun doing it. Basically you get some stuff that you have to take to your grandmothers house down “the path” which will help her sing again or some morbid stuff. Again I had no idea what I was doing, it was crazy. Initially you choose one of 7 young girls to walk down this path. It says “stay on the path” which if you do, you will lose. I swear the dev’s must’ve had a laugh watching the beta testers scratching heads after doing exactly what they were told and still failing. So yea, you wander through the forest and encounter all sorts of things from undead werewolfs, to lake ghosts to a random girl in white that runs around aimlessly (I actually think she takes you back to the path, but dont quote me on that one). Meanwhile creepy music was playing in the background which featured heavily on non-worded vocals…y’know “la la ooooo” and shit :S. Picking up items in the forests next to the path unlock more rooms in your grandmothers house and meeting “bosses” (I think thats what you call them) like the Lake Ghost will change the interior of the house when you reach it.
- tl;dr: Creepy game, makes little sense but it shit loads of fun for how short it is.
Trine:
- While this game didnt come in the Indie game pack, I’ll throw it in here anyway. This game only needs to be summed up in one word: Awesome. Seriously you play with 3 character’s spirits merged into a single body and you can switch between a Wizard, a Warrior and an Archer as your main character. You have to use the unique skills of all 3 classes to navigate the maps…but they always allow for you to get through the level in more than one way…which is awesome.
- Awesome game, played it through twice.
Blueberry Garden:
- Holy crap, this game buzzed me out so hard…I had Spine around when I played it through to the end and even with his help I still couldnt figure out what the hell I was doing…basically you collect random objects from this “blueberry” garden using the assistance of various fruit trees around that give all sorts of weird effects, like altering the land scape or giving you an air bubble. Once you get the gigantic objects, they stack on top of each other on a platform and you need to use them to get to the moon.
- I know, I dont get it either…but hell It was fun and you can fly! Has a cool soundtrack and when you win you get a website login to see the concept art which itself was awesome.
Crayon Physics Deluxe:
- Eh, I’ve seen this sort of thing emulated a million times in flash games and whatnot…so it didnt strike me as special in any way. Basically you draw shapes using your crayon to push/throw/drop a ball to the finish mark. The objects have physics attached to them…so heavy shapes will have more weight behind them etc.
- Fun game, but meh, seen it all before.
Gish:
- I remember seeing a demo for this game a long time ago…basically you’re a blob of goo…and you can use fancy techniques like “slide” which slithers you through small areas and “spike” which allows you to stick to things like roofs. Now this game itself is a lot of fun…but it is most rewarding when you pull of combos…Like sliding down a tube only to go heavy to gain speed on a slope so you can launch yourself into a roof and stick and roll off it to a high platform…makes me feel happy.
- Lot of fun, but I was too addicted to the other games to be bothered playing it heaps.
World of Goo:
- I’ve played this game before so this game was nothing new to me…but hell yea I played it again! The game is basically about reaching objectives (namely a tube) using goo balls as construction blocks. When you stick them together they form “girders” ,I suppose, between them. This is probably one of the more fun games I have ever played. No doubt it would be torture to the casual gamer that doesnt want to think their way through a puzzling construction game…but for the rest of us that are capable of free thought will love this game.
- I love the goo.
Braid:
- Again, I bought and played this game before I got it in this pack. If you like puzzle games or something pretty on your screen and you dont yet have Braid then you are stupid. Not much can be said about this game other than you control time, you can create a shadow of yourself that acts along side you as a teammate and shit.Braid, awesome.
- Again, it would be torture to the non-thinker-gamers out there.
Darwinia:
- I didnt get much of a chance to play this game unfortunately but I will definately be going back to it. As far as I found you were in a simulated computer world wherein you have to clean out some nasty virus like creatures. You create soldiers and march them around and blast out the creepy virus things with some sort of laser. You also can make Engineers to complete objectives and pick up objects.
- Was a little confusing to start with but good all round game…has 3d block graphics which makes it look stylish.
Mr. Robot:
- This game cracked me up…as for the first part of it, I was just harassed by some rather large relocation and construction robots. Basically you’re a little repair robot that ends up being equipped to take on a kill dodgy viruses in systems using a turn based attack game which reeked of a prehistoric Final Fantasy style. I honestly dont think the attack system was necessary amoungst the puzzle games…but whatever. Also you run around in a weird view where you will always end up pressing the wrong movement keys…this becomes a particular problem when you move really fast along a high platform and you skid when you press the wrong way…WHEEEEE! another 5 minute walk just to get back to where you fell off!
- Overall it was fun and had some great comedy put into the text.
Right so I’m done…expect another post from me in a few days as Wolfenstein has just been shipped to me.

“Initially you choose one of 7 young girls to walk down this path.”
I’m likin this game
bored at school thought i’d list a couple of my thoughts from what i’ve played.
Audiosurf – Love it if i can ever be bothered to play it.
World of Goo – Cute in a way and an original game but didn’t really appeal to me
Darwinia – It was good but i was playing it on a terrible pc so it was like LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG :<
Crayon Physics – I like the soundtrack, makes the game feel serene and peaceful and is pretty fun without putting much thought into it.
Lol … they aren’t young enough for you cake
I’ve played Audiosurf and Braid (on a 360 at work) and I liked both.
