Nyan Koi – Worth Loving?

Fire | 5 Nov 2009

Now that I’ve finished my exams, I’ve suddenly freed up alot of time, so I’ve decided to catch up on the many animes that I’ve missed out or refused to watch and also to pick up new series. One of the series which I’ve picked up happens to be ‘Nyan Koi’ which translates to ‘Meow Love’. With a title such as this, the first thing you’ll probably think is that it’s stupid and/or cheesy and is probably just a silly moe show full of lolis cladded in neko-mimi. While I could thoroughly enjoy it if it was, luckily it isn’t.

Opinion Based on 1st EP

In short the story is about Junpei Kosaka, typical high school guy who is allergic to cats who suddenly is able to hear the voices of cats. Co-incidentially his love interest has an obsession with cats (didn’t see that one coming). Oh and he’s too afraid to tell her he loves her (yeh that wasn’t far away either). Eventually he finds out that it’s because he broke a cat’s god statue, he’s now cursed being able to hear the voices of cats. Now he has to do 100 good deeds for cats to get rid of the curse. The premise isn’t that original but I don’t think that’s where the appeal for this show lies.

The animation in this show is quite well done although not to the detail of DtB2 and it’s flying cars. It gets its job done and feels in place feeling pretty smooth. The characters themselves are quite finely detailed that you could tell who’s who from similar characters and they don’t have the same face so that’s a plus. There really isn’t anything special to say here.

The OP & ED are ok fitting with the theme of the show but other than that it isn’t really outstanding and the soundtrack isn’t very noticable blending in well with the show. Somehow I think I heard all the characters voices before but I think that’s the side-effect of watching too much anime. Though there are no really loud screeching voices so I guess it’s ok.

The characteres are pretty interesting though. The cats really have a distinct character and Junpei isn’t that annoying / wuss of a protagonist unlike another certain Junpei. Kaede is a huge dojikko and has a lovely moe~ obsession with cats so I guess it’s worth watching. She isn’t some stupid moebomb character like the K-On group and actually feels authentic.

In the end, this show is looking pretty good enough to follow through to the end or close to. I’m liking it a bit so I’ll continue watching it. It’s a pretty average show but Kaede makes it really enjoyable for me because she’s really cute.

I recommend this to anybody who lieks slice of life comedy. Or at least worth checking it out. It seems to be a decent show I guess, isn’t really that great. So totally worth it for Kaede though.
